- Contraindications
- Pregnancy
- Overdose
- Interaction with other drugs

Betamethasone - anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic Beta-Val antipruritic agent. Betamethasone inhibits the migration of leukocytes, the release of lysosomal enzymes and anti-inflammatory mediators in the focus of inflammation, inhibits phagocytosis, reduces vascular tissue permeability, and prevents the formation of inflammatory edema.
Pharmacokinetics
With topical application of the cream in therapeutic doses, the transdermal absorption of betamethasone into the blood is insignificant - 12-14%. Binding to blood proteins is 64%. It is metabolized in the liver. Excretion occurs in the form of metabolites mainly by the kidneys, an insignificant part - with bile. The presence of an inflammatory process, skin lesions and the use of occlusive dressings can enhance the absorption of betamethasone.
Indications for use:
Ointment Betamethasone It is used to reduce the inflammatory manifestations of dermatoses sensitive to glucocorticoid therapy, such as eczema and any type of dermatitis, including atopic eczema, photodermatitis, lichen planus, neurodermatitis, nodular prurigo, discoid lupus erythematosus, lipoid necrobiosis, pretibial myxedema and erythroderma. In addition, it is also effective in treating psoriasis of the scalp and other forms of psoriasis, with the exception of extensive plaque.
Mode of application
Ointment Betamethasone apply Beta-Val. The dose of the drug is set individually, since it depends on the area of the affected area. The cream must be applied to the affected area with a thin layer 2 times a day, gently rubbing into the skin; after clinical improvement is achieved, the frequency of use of the drug can be reduced to 1 time per day. The duration of treatment is determined by the rate of elimination of the inflammatory process, the cessation of itching, skin cleansing; the duration of the course of treatment depends on the type and severity of the course of the disease, determined by the doctor and usually Beta-Val 1-2 weeks, but not more than 3 weeks; Between repeated courses, a break of at least 20 days is required. The course of treatment for children and patients with facial lesions should be no more than 5 days. Not applicable in ophthalmic practice.
Side effects:
On the skin side: with prolonged therapy, a burning sensation, itching, irritation, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acne, hypopigmentation, hyperpegmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, maceration of the skin, secondary infection, sweating may occur.
With prolonged continuous use, it is possible to develop atrophy of the skin, striae and telangiectasias, especially when applied to the face.
Systemic manifestations: in some patients, systemic side effects may develop: inhibition of adrenal cortex function, decreased carbohydrate tolerance, Itsenko-Cushing's syndrome; in children, inhibition of adrenal cortex function can occur more often and is manifested by stunted growth, increased intracranial pressure, decreased body weight, decreased levels of cortisol in blood plasma and that most, a lack of response to stimulation by adrenocorticotropic hormone, manifestations of intracranial hypertension (fontanel swelling, headache and bilateral edema optic nerve).
Contraindications
Ointment Betamethasone should not be used for primary viral, fungal and bacterial skin lesions, skin tuberculosis, skin manifestations of syphilis, using this reactions after vaccination, for acne, perioral dermatitis, perianal and genital itching, rosacea, extensive plaque psoriasis, varicose veins, as well as individual hypersensitivity to betamethasone or to other components of the drug.
Pregnancy
Due to the fact that the safety of the use of local glucocorticosteroids in pregnant women has not been established, the administration of drugs of this group during pregnancy is possible only if the potential benefit to the mother outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. During pregnancy, drugs of this group should not be used in high doses and for a long time. To date, it has not been studied whether topical administration of glucocorticosteroids leads to systemic adsorption sufficient for determination in breast milk. During breastfeeding, the use of the drug is possible only according to strict indications and after evaluating the benefit-risk ratio, but the cream should not be applied to the skin of the breast.
Overdose
Excessive and prolonged use of ointment Betamethasone on a large surface of the skin can lead to the manifestation of systemic side effects characteristic of glucocorticosteroids, in particular to inhibition of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system with the development of secondary adrenal gland insufficiency and the appearance of symptoms of hypercorticism, including Itsenko-Cushing's syndrome (especially in children).
Treatment. Symptomatic Therapy If necessary, correct the electrolyte balance. Gradual discontinuation of the drug is recommended.
Interaction with other drugs
Interaction Betamethasone with other drugs not described.
